Pearl is a 45 year old Goffin’s cockatoo also known as a Tanimbar corella.
For15 years, this beautiful gem of a bird was heartlessly confined to a 2’ round
padlocked cage, alone, amidst stockpiles of rubbish. Pearl's days were spent sitting
motionlessly on a single perch, surviving on peanuts and a ‘cheap’ seed mix.
Pearl's only source of light was generated by a single ceiling light that was turned on only whenever someone ventured down to the dark windowless basement to refill his meager food bowl.
Deprived of light, Pearl’s eyes were severely damaged. In addition, our avian veterinarian found that Pearl had a heart murmur, arthritis, atrophied muscles, elevated white blood cell count and heavy metal toxicosis due to ingestion of zinc.
We were also able to determine that Pearl is a male cockatoo! While we still call him Pearl, we also call him Mr. Pearlman.🥰 He seems to really like it! 💗
Favorite foods: blueberries, green peas, almonds, pistachio nuts and walnuts
Favorite Toy: Pearl was afraid of toys at first, but now he loves tearing up pine wood toys and foraging for the treats we hide in almost every toy!
